Schleswig-Holstein 1850-67


Scleswig and Holstein are two former states in the area around the Danish German border. Schleswig was parted in 1920 in a nothern part which became part of Denmark and the southern part became part of Germany. Holstein became a part of Preussen in 1864 and later in 1872 a part of Germany.

SH1 1 schilling blue 1300,-* The blue colour varies. Unused stamps are more commen than cancelled - price: 120,-.
Only used in Holstein.
SH2 2 schilling red 1700,-* The red colour exist in rosa variations. Unused stamps are more commen than cancelled - price: 180,-.
Only used in Holstein.

The two stamps from Holstein (SH1 and SH2) was issued at November 15 1850 and was used until April 1852. Schleswig had been served by Danish post from july 1850 and here the first Danish stamps were issued April 1851.

Schleswig-Holstein 1851-1864



Danish stamps (kl1-kl6) was used in Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg from 1851 until March 1864, when they were replaced by stamps issued for use in Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg.

Danish stamps used in Schlewig-Holstein can be recognised by the cancellation. Below are 3 illustrations of letters used in the part of Schleswig-Holstein that today is a part of Germany. Prices of stamps cancelled in Schleswig-Holstein and letters from the same area and periode vary from prices close to or a little higher than the one given in frimindeks - see 1851-74.

The three letters below are brought on internet auctions in 2007 - the 4 RBS was sold at close to 25 € and the two 4 skilling were sold at prices near 10 € for one letter.

SH3 4 Schilling red 200,- The value 4 schilling refers to the Danish currency at that time = 4 skilling.
SH4 1 1/4 Schilling dark yellowgreen 8,-
SH5 1 1/4 Schilling blue 20,- Exist in three different types with different letters. Type 1: Rather narrow letters and dots over I in Schilling. Type 2: Thicker letters and dots over I in Schilling. Type 3: Letters as type 2 but without dots over I.
SH6 1 1/4 Schilling blue 20,- New engraving. Compared to SH5 the letters on the edges of SH6 are seperated H.R.Z.G.L. and F.R.M. are seperated by dots. SH5 has thicker letters that without dots.
